从中国地图上看，长江像条横贯东西的大蜈蚣，雾河乃其百足之一，雾落则是河水冲积而成的一座终年阴霾、难见天日的闭塞小城。长篇小说《白话雾落》讲述的是在那个整天大雾弥漫见不到多少阳光的小城雾落，外婆麻姑、母亲阿山、小姨阿水及"我"小鱼三代女性的现实生活故事。姚鄂梅的这部长篇小说完全可以被看作"女性主义"的读本，但它与通常的八十年代的"社会问题"不同，与九十年代"私人话语"的作品不同，她更多的是以极端的、可感的情节虚构，以极富想象力的浪漫主义色调，渲染出女性绝处逢生的绚丽和光芒。
